How long have you been in business?
Bike n Hike has been in business since 1971.

Can you explain how the idea for a store came to be?
That was before I was born! But I would say from the love of riding bikes.

Who owns the shop? Who works there?
Kevin Chudy owns Bike N Hike. We have four stores in the greater Portland Metro area; the Milwaukie and Hillsboro locations being the go-to locations for BMX.

What changes have you noticed in the scene since the shop opened?
I’ve seen BMX bikes go from bikes like 23 lb. GT Pro Series race bikes, to overkill 43 lb. S&M Warpigs, back to 23-25 lb. highly refined street/dirt bikes. The bikes in this day and age are pretty incredible.

What does Bike n Hike offer that mail-order doesn’t?
Well, first and foremost we offer expert service. On a daily basis we help out locals with mechanical issues to keep them rolling. To customers who have purchased a bike from us, we offer a lifetime flat repair service where we will inspect the tire and install a new tube in every flat tire you get as long as you own the bike. Advice is always free, we are here in person every day of the week available to answer questions or help out in any way needed.

Three best-selling Animal products:
GLH tires, TWW tires, and Edwin grips.

Strangest experience selling an Animal product:
I don’t recall anything strange! It takes a lot to weird us out. We’ve seen it all.

Why carry Animal?
Because it’s a reliable product. I have had a great experience with them over the years, they have always taken care of us and our loyal customers. What more could you ask for?

How many trends have you seen come and go since you have been open?
Wow. I don’t even know where to start. I’m just going  to take the high road on this one and say over the last 5 years I love the direction the BMX industry is headed, and hope it continues to head that direction for many years to come.

What is the best thing you gained or witnessed from owning/ starting the shop?
I love helping kids pick out new BMX bikes. Hands down my favorite part of my job. The excitement, enthusiasm, and the look on their face when they know their taking home that shiny new bike is an incredible experience that never gets old.

Where do you see the shop in ten years?
Still proudly serving the BMX community!
