How long have you been in business? We opened our doors in 1967. We added the bike shop in October 2008.

Can you explain how the idea for a store came to be? Our town always had “Bernie’s Bike Shop”. About 6 years ago, he closed his doors and opted for retirement. After about the 1000th customer asking for bike gear, we decided we better carve out a section of the store and dedicate it to bikers.

Who owns the shop? Who works there? The Big boss is Warren Larsen. I (Rob Larsen) run the shop, my bother Lars Larsen helps out when he isn’t running the other side of our business, and our employees are Matt Nilsson, Mike ” Small Fry” Almodovar, and Vincent Prybeck.

What events have you done at the shop in the past few years? We hosted the GT Air Show a couple times; we had a session or two at the local skate parks. We recently helped out the John Marshall School on Edison for a bike safety and obstacle course event. We also brought down some ramps and had our riders put on a show for the kids.

What changes have you noticed in the scene since the shop opened? We have seen scooters really take off; I know most core bmxer’s do not like scooters, but scooters have allowed us to really expand our BMX offerings here at the shop. We literally have thousands of items in stock. We are constantly adding new lines and new products all the time.

What does Extremz offer that mail-order doesn’t? We can literally offer you personal service that no mail-order company can. We take the time to get to know our customer and what their interests are. We always like to think we go the extra mile for our customers because we always hear how they have had horrible expieriences at other shops.

Top three best-selling Animal products: Grips, pedals, tires.

Strangest experience selling an Animal product: Sending an Animal stem to the heart of Indonesia because “No one else will have this here for years !!” The guy contacted me at least 10 times to make sure I shipped the right color, got the right address; and after receiving the stem he proceeded to send me a thank-you letter.

Why carry Animal? We carry Animal for a number of reasons: customer demand, local company, their BMX roots, their commitment to BMX, and the guys there are a great group to deal with.

What’s something you never expected to happen after opening the shop? We never expected our customers to really take to us the way they have; it is almost like a family with our network of customers. I think since we are trying our best to make sure you can get everything you need right here, we have earned the respect of the BMX community.

Any future plans for the shop? Keep growing! I would like to see if we could get a couple of satellite stores up and running. Get some smaller shops closer to some local skate parks so kids have somewhere to check things out and hang for a bit.

How many trends have you seen come and go since you have been open? Most of the trends we watch are of color-ways; so many bike companies change up their color offerings and we can almost always tell what colors are going to be hot. What is tough with so much variety out there now is to see one company or one item really take off.

What is the best thing you gained or witnessed from starting the shop? We have gained a great bunch of customers, and we keep learning more and more everyday about the biking world. So many companies are coming out with new items, new materials, so it is awesome to just sit back and observe the industry.

If you can have one BMX product that doesn’t exist yet what would it be? A bike that will automatically land tricks for me; these young riders today are so talented and keep raising the bar. I would be happy to be able to do about 10% of what these guys can do today. And not just the pro riders out there; there are so many kids out there that can really kill it.

Where do you see the shop in ten years? In 10 long years I would like to see our shop branch out and open a few more shops, host a few really big events, and see if we can’t get a nationwide team out there.
